MariaDB Community Server supports the caching_sha2_password authentication plugin starting with version 11.8.4.
The plugin is not enabled by default and must be installed by a database administrator if needed.
The plugin can be installed using the following SQL command:
INSTALL SONAME 'auth_mysql_sha2';
The installation is saved by MariaDB, so the plugin remains available even after a restart.
Alternatively, the plugin can be enabled via the MariaDB configuration.
To do this, add the following setting to the [mariadb] section of the file /etc/mysql/mariadb.conf.d/50-server.cnf, for example:
[mariadb]
plugin_load_add = auth_mysql_sha2
You will then need to restart the MariaDB service.
The actual path to the configuration file may vary depending on the operating system and installation type.
You can verify that the feature has been successfully enabled using the following SQL command:
SHOW PLUGINS;
The caching_sha2_password plugin must be listed with the status ACTIVE.
An existing user can then be migrated as follows:
ALTER USER 'vimp'@'%'
IDENTIFIED VIA caching_sha2_password
USING PASSWORD('NEW_PASSWORD');
(Replace ‘vimp’ with the name of the user in your VIMP database and ‘NEW_PASSWORD’ with a new, secure password)
